Although both the Norwegian and the French are Europeans they do not exactly behave in the same way. This can lead to a lot of stress as we can see in short movie.
Movie!
This movie shows an argument between a Norwegian boss and a French employee. As it will show both men behave differently in this stressfull situation.

Hi. By surprise I discovered this blog. I like it! The funniest culture shock I have ever witnessed was when a group of Swedes (well organized and no surprises) went on a tour to a Finnish (impulsive, if it works it works, informal) chemical plant Just when they visited the plant, a reactor had overflowed and the plant was covered in a thick muck. The Swedisch response: I told you so, that is what you get with Fins. The Finnish response: who cares, shit happens. Mark.
Norway is the best country to live in according to a United Nation Survey. Some of criteria might be argued such as living cost, however this article depicts the main norwegian culture features shared amon the immigrants. The Article of JONATHAN FOREMAN in the Daily Email is resuming thes features ( http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=362369&in_page_id=1770 )
Heris is some extracts : - Alcohol, like so many other things here, is taxed so highly - and is so vital to the native idea of a good time - that it would be simply unthinkable to cross a national border without your regulation two litres of booze. - The Norwegians drink like Vikings, in vast amounts, very noisily, before tumbling out of bars in the early hours, women as drunk as men - perhaps the last remnant of Norse heritage
Hi, The story in this movie is very recognizable. The French and Norwegian behavior and negotiating tactics differ quite a lot. In accordance to this subject I just read a very interesting book which I can advise everybody to read if you are operating in a multicultural business environment. The book is called: "Cross-Cultural Business Behavior" and is written by Richard R. Gesteland. (ISBN 10:8763000938, website http://web.cbspress.dk/FMPro?-token=12692374&-db=Products.fp3&-lay=WEB&-format=book.htm&nyISBN=8763000938&-find)
In his book Gesteland distinguishes different groups (group A till Group H)to which each country belongs. He Distinguishes following four characteristics:
*Relationship focused - versus Deal focused *Formal versus Informal *Monochronic versus Polychronic *Expressive versus Reserved
According to Gestelands' theory France belongs to group E, which means: Moderately deal focused - Formal - Variably Monochronic - Expressive.
Norway belongs to group G, which means: Deal focused - Moderately formal - Monochronic - Reserved.
As you see they differ quite a lot in the four characteristics mentioned, which can lead to difficulties as shown in the movie.
Please have a look at the book, you certainly can take your benefit from it!
We realize that some of our observations are biased due to our own cultural backgrounds. We therefore welcome your comments regarding the situations we describe on this blog.
We are part of an international team of MBA students with three different nationalities: Ukrain, French and Dutch. At the beginning of this challenging project we all had our own expectations. During the course of the project we learned to respect each others culture and learned to work in a collaborative way. The end result is this cross-cultural blog.
